The Top Design Trends For 2020

2020 is here, and so is a whole host of new style trends, and design tips, as people look to leave 2019 and the 2010’s behind for the new decade.

So, what is hot and what is not going into 2020?

In short, 2020 is going to be all about nature – natural tones, natural light, and environmentally conscious design. This will be paired with a greater variety of materials used in furniture as customer’s look for quirkier and less rigid designs.

Let’s dig deeper.

1. Natural Colours

If you haven’t heard of Behr, you might want to look into them; They are one of the leading experts in paint and, since 2018, have been using their vast knowledge of the industry to come up with what they call; The Colour of the Year. This helps stylists and designers know what their clients are likely to be requesting in the new year.

It also helps customers know what is going to be trendy for the next 12 months.

The colour of the year has so far pinballed around between blue and green, starting off green for 2018, then blue for 2019, and now back to green for 2020. More specifically; Back to Nature Green.

But this doesn’t mean this is the one colour you can use for 2020. Stylists and those in the know point to an overall shift towards natural colour tones from customers. If Back to Nature Green is not your thing, there are other options out there.

Blues and greens are definitely an option, but brown can also carry those luxurious earthy tones.

2. Curves

For too long our homes have been dominated by 90-degree angles and rigid shapes. The time for change is apparently upon us.

That’s right, 2020 is going to be all about curves.

This one is pretty self-explanatory as it is entirely customer driven. There is no deciding authority out there, people just like curvy furniture now.

But curvy in what way? Are we talking oval tables, or something perhaps a bit funkier?

Well, the answer is both.

Curvy dining tables are not only very sleek and elegant to look at, but they also don’t take up that much space so it’s a win-win for anyone looking for a change up in 2020.

3. Ceramics

Ceramics, as a material, have been around for thousands of years – in fact they were one of the first building materials made by man. It is time to give them the credit they are due.

Ceramic furniture meets the 2020 brief of natural tones, they are rarely one consistent colour and have that earthy quality to them.

But they are also incredibly durable. When we think ceramics we think of plates, and cups that shatter into pieces when dropped. But that’s not far on ceramics as a whole. Ceramic furniture is incredibly durable because of the qualities inherent in ceramic – it is scratch resistant, spill resistant, chemical resistant. In other words, it can more than put up with your dining habits and is a dream to clean.

4. Responsibly Sourced Materials

If we are doing in nature in 2020, we are doing it right. It’s time to get know the furniture you are buying and the pieces that make it up.

If that sounds like a lot of effort, it shouldn’t be. Any retailer worth their salt should be able to tell you where each part of a piece comes from and the sustainability of its creation. All the work has been taken out for you so you can have the peace of mind that your next piece of furniture is entirely renewable, recyclable or sustainable.

Take our lounges for instance, they may just seem like ordinary lounge – so what’s sustainable about them? Well, a lot of people don’t often think about it, but a crucial part of a lounge or couch is the frame; the usually wooden frame.

All the frames in our lounges are durable, covered by a 10-year warranty and are sourced entirely from sustainable materials.

This trend is more than worth the effort. The peace of mind knowing your product and retailer are both thinking of the environment reduces the stress of having to do so yourself when out shopping.

5. House Plants

Okay, hear us out. Many of you probably don’t think of house plants as being on the same level as the rest of your furniture – but they are a definite style trend for 2020.

The ABC noted, in 2017, that social media is playing a huge part in the greenery chaos currently consuming our homes. 3 years on, the craze is still going, and it is time to take it seriously.

Let’s look at the facts; from 2014 to 2019, potted plant ownership rose from 7.7% to 9.4%, the industry is currently worth $689 million. And they are very popular on social media.

But plants are also time consuming and require upkeep; luxuries many of us just can’t afford. So want the benefit of a green space, without having to raise a leafy child?

Fake plants.

That’s right, the synthetic shrubbery has come a long way from the tacky designs of decades gone by and are now very convincing.

Sometimes you just have to think outside the (planter) box when it comes to trends.
